The Friends Who Feel Like Home

There is something unexpectedly beautiful about the friendships that have shaped this season of my life. Some of these women have walked beside me for years. Others came into my life more recently. Time isn’t what makes these friendships extraordinary. It’s how they’ve grown. It’s the way they’ve become places of safety, laughter, honesty, and unwavering love.

It hasn’t been a straight path. There have been disappointments, heartbreaks, and seasons where I questioned my own judgment. I wondered why I couldn’t always tell the difference between relationships that were truly safe and those that only appeared to be. I thought that by this age I would have mastered discerning who belonged in my life. But maybe that’s not how life works.

Maybe we don’t always find our people all at once. Maybe some arrive early and grow with us. Others find us exactly when we’re ready to receive them. However they came into my life, they’ve become part of the story I’m most grateful to tell. My heart is genuinely full. I don’t know if they realize just how much I cherish them.

These are the friendships where I know I’m truly loved. When I’m hurting, they hurt. When I get quiet or that look comes across my face, they notice without me saying a word. They check in. They sit with me. They make space for me. With them, I feel safe. I don’t have to perform. I don’t have to shrink. I don’t have to become a version of myself that’s easier to love or more acceptable. I simply get to be me.

Loving.
A little unhinged.
Blunt.
Witty.
Fiercely loyal.

The kind of person whose love runs deep and who shows up consistently. For so long, I carried the quiet fear that I was “too much.”

Too talkative.
Too emotional.
Too thoughtful.
Too available.
Too… me.

That fear doesn’t disappear overnight. Even now, it still whispers in the back of my mind from time to time. But these friendships are teaching me something different. The right people don’t make you question your worth. They don’t leave you replaying every text message, analyzing every conversation, or wondering if you’ve suddenly become too much. They make room for who you already are. They offer grace instead of conditions. They remind you that being fully yourself isn’t something you have to apologize for.

Leaning into friendships like these has been both comforting and terrifying. Comforting because I’ve finally experienced what emotional safety feels like. Terrifying because once you’ve found something this meaningful, there’s always a quiet fear of losing it. Maybe that’s simply the cost of loving people deeply.

My hope is that these women remain part of my story for years to come. That we’ll celebrate life’s biggest milestones together, sit beside one another through heartbreak and joy, answer each other’s calls decades from now, and continue choosing one another through every new season. After 40, I’ve learned that friendship isn’t measured by how many people surround you. It’s measured by the people who make you feel at home in your own skin. And if you’re lucky enough to find those people, whether they’ve been there for twenty years or two hold them close.

They are one of life’s greatest gifts. I love you🥰

xoxo
