Learning To Care For My Hands In My 40s

When I slipped on a ring recently while preparing for my upcoming 10-year anniversary, I caught a glimpse of my hands in a photo, and my heart sank. My hands looked dry, dark, and older than I feel. Instead of seeing 43-year-old me, I saw what looked like 60-year-old hands. It was a wake-up call.

We spend so much time focused on our faces, our hair, even our bodies, but our hands often get neglected. And yet, they carry our stories. My hands have held babies, worked hard, wiped away tears, clapped in joy, and touched the people I love most. They deserve care, too.

As a nurse working in the hospital, I wash my hands countless times a day and use sanitizer more than I can even keep track of. It’s necessary to protect my patients and myself, but it’s also one of the biggest reasons my hands have aged so quickly. Constant washing strips away natural oils, while alcohol-based sanitizers dry and dull the skin.

So, I’ve started a new routine, one that honors my skin, my melanin, and this new stage of life:

🌞 Morning Care

Gentle wash: I switched to a hydrating hand wash that doesn’t strip my skin. Moisturize + protect: A hand cream with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid helps brighten and plump my skin. Sunscreen (yes, for hands): UV rays don’t discriminate, and protecting my melanin helps prevent dark spots and thinning.

🌙 Night Care

Exfoliate a few nights a week: A gentle scrub or lotion with lactic acid removes dullness. Brightening treatment: Vitamin C or niacinamide helps even out tone. Deep moisture: I layer on cocoa butter or shea butter and slip on cotton gloves overnight.

🌸 Weekly Extras

Hand masks for a little TLC. Cuticle oil to keep nails healthy and soft.

🩺 Nurse Life: Hand Care Survival Tips

For anyone working in healthcare (or any job with constant handwashing), here are a few things that have helped me:

Keep travel-size cream in your scrubs pocket → Apply after every few washes, even if it’s just a tiny dab. Choose a fast-absorbing formula → Non-greasy creams like Neutrogena Norwegian Formula or Eucerin Advanced Repair won’t interfere with gloves. Use “softer” sanitizers when possible → Some hospital-approved sanitizers now come with added moisturizers. If your workplace allows, pick those stations when you can. Night repair is non-negotiable → Since my workday is rough on my skin, I double down at night with heavy cream + cotton gloves.

It’s simple, but already I’m noticing a difference. My hands feel softer, look more vibrant, and most importantly, I feel proud of them again.

If you’re in your 40s (or beyond) and noticing changes in your hands, you’re not alone. Aging is real, but so is restoration. With a little intentional care, we can honor our hands the same way we honor our faces with love, patience, and consistency.

Because at the end of the day, our hands don’t just tell our age. They tell our story.

xoxo
